A 20-year-old woman was shot to death during an argument at a Christmas Eve gathering, Ontario police said, and a 23-year-old acquaintance was arrested on suspicion of murder three days later.
Ulices Lopez, of Covina, was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in the death of Stephanie Gamez of Covina. Lopez was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Gamez was the sister of Lopez’s girlfriend, said Officer Sequoia Payton, a Police Department spokesperson. The girlfriend was present at the shooting, Payton said. Detectives are still trying to piece together the slaying, including whose gun was used.
The shooting happened at about 10:12 p.m. in the 1100 block of Highland Court. Lopez was arguing with Gamez’s stepfather when Gamez was shot and killed with a handgun, a police news release said. Gamez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lopez was arrested at the Ontario Police Department on Dec. 27.
Police ask anyone with information on the case to call Detective Gregory Clinton at 909-408-1033.
