CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – A boyfriend and girlfriend both are charged with drunken driving after he called her for a ride from crash in Northern Michigan on New Year’s Day.
Michigan State Police say the girlfriend was drunk when she drove to the scene of the minor crash, which allegedly involved him driving while drunk.
A passerby reported the crash around 3:05 p.m. Saturday on County Road 612 near I-75 in Crawford County’s Maple Forest Township.
The witness told police he drove up on the scene where a Pontiac G6 had crashed and stopped to help. A woman driving a Jeep Commander SUV drove up, the man driving the crashed car got in and they advised the witness that they would return later.
While Michigan State Police were talking with the witness at the scene, he pointed out that the Jeep was driving by without stopping. A trooper left the scene and began following the Jeep.
Police say the 35-year-old woman from Kingsley crossed the center line while she was driving, so the trooper initiated a traffic stop. Police determined she likely was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Michigan State Police say the woman’s boyfriend, who was identified as a 34-year-old from Frederic, called her and asked for a ride from the crash scene.
The boyfriend, who was involved in the earlier crash, was sitting in the passenger seat of the Jeep during the traffic stop. He also showed signs of intoxication, according to Michigan State Police.
Police conducted field sobriety tests on both the boyfriend and girlfriend during the traffic stop.
Michigan State Police arrested the woman for her third offense of operating while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license and obstruction of justice. The man was arrested for operating while intoxicated, failure to report a crash and a probation violation.
Both suspects remained in the Crawford County Jail on Monday while awaiting arraignment in court.
