JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston County Coroner’s Office released the name of an 83-year-old woman who was fatally shot Monday afternoon.
Carole Schaefer, of James Island, died in the shooting at a home in the 1200 block of Oceanview Road from a gunshot wound, Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said.
Deputies responded at approximately 3:35 p.m. to the home for what was initially reported as a medical call, but deputies discovered Schaefer and a second shooting victim, 56-year-old John Thomas Schaefer, sheriff’s spokesman Andrew Knapp said.
Investigators confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Carole Schaefer is the mother of John Thomas Schaefer.
Deputies say he was taken to an area hospital for treatment of “a serious gunshot wound” and will be charged with murder in her death.
Deputies believe he fatally shot her before shooting himself. Knapp said deputies secured a firearm nearby.
He is expected to have a bond hearing once his condition improves, Knapp said.
A booking photo of Schaefer was not immediately available.
