HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) β€” A Huntsville police officer was charged with capital murder and jailed without bond in the off-duty killing of his pregnant girlfriend, who was shot to death in a car, court records showed Monday.

Officer David Michael McCoy, 28, was booked into the Madison County Jail late Friday, records show, and a statement by the Huntsville Police Department said he was placed on administrative leave.

Arrest records showed McCory was charged in the slaying of Courtney Spraggins, whose family identified her as being pregnant with the child of McCoy, her boyfriend.

β€œShe was my heart, she was my twin, she was my everything,” Kimberly Walter, Spraggins’ mother, told WHNT-TV. β€œHe took her. He just took her from me.”

McCoy’s address listed in court records is on the same street in Madison where police said the shooting occurred. Spraggins was shot while in a Toyota Camry, records showed.

A lawyer appointed to represent McCoy did not immediately return a email seeking comment on his behalf.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will lead the investigation and release any additional information about the case, Huntsville police said.
