David McCoy is a suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Courtney Spraggins. McCoy has been arrested in connection with his case.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. β€” The State Bureau of Investigation has charged David McCoy, a Huntsville Police Officer, with capital murder. McCoy allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend on January 7, 2022. He was off-duty at the time of the incident.

McCoy is currently sitting in the Madison County Jail since Monday in connection with the murder of Courtney Spraggins. There have since been decisions made regarding his status as a city employee.

“On Friday, January 7, Huntsville Police Officers answered a call to the Weston Ranch Apartments and found the decedent with a gunshot wound, within minutes, responding officers determined that officer david McCoy, an off duty officer who resides at this apartment complex was a person of interest,” said Huntsville Chief of Police Mark McMurray.

According to McMurray, there was no hesitation in this determination made by his officers.

“They turned in one of their own officers, that very minute when they came to that scene they weren’t holding anything back, there was no cover-up and we initiated the SBI process immediately,” said McMurray.

In turn, there was also no hesitation from the SBI.

“SBI special agents immediately responded to the scene and launched an investigation which revealed the deceased victim to be Courtney Spraggins, 26-years-old of Trion, Georgia.”

When McCoy was named a person of interest he was stripped of his title with HPD and his police equipment, as well as placed on administrative leave but once he was formally charged with capital murder…

“I rescinded the administrative leave and placed McCoy on leave without pay – unexcused. David McCoy is no longer a police officer or an employee of the City of Huntsville, at this time,” McMurray.

When asked how it felt when he heard what had happened with one of his officers McMurray said, “devastated just devastated, but I mean justice doesn’t slow us down. It demands we take action immediately. We did… everything was done appropriately, quickly and within policy so I mean, it’s heartbreaking. But Miss Spraggins, you know, the impact of that family can be felt for generations. It’s heartbreaking, just heartbreaking, for what that family is going through now as well.”
