Patna: Bhai Rajendra Singh, chief granthi of the Srihari Mandir Sahib in Patna Sahib, Bihar, died on Monday. He passed away due to a wound on his neck inflicted by a kirpan (small knife).

The police are investigating whether he attempted suicide or was killed by someone.

He died while undergoing treatment at PMCH, a hospital in Patna, late on Sunday night at 2:45 am. He was admitted there on January 13.

While speaking to media, his son Daya Singh, who was with him in the hospital, said that his father’s health was continuously improving. But then suddenly he started having difficulty breathing late last night.

Despite best efforts from the doctors, he breathed his last at 2:45 am. Daya Singh further said only a post-mortem report of the body will determine whether he had tried to commit suicide by attacking himself with a kirpan in the neck or someone attacked him and killed him.

There has been a wave of mourning in the Sikh society as soon as the news of the death of the chief granthi broke out. President of the Management Committee Avtar Singh, General Secretary Inderjit Singh and other office bearers and members have expressed their condolences.

Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee member and former general secretary Mahendra Pal Singh Dhillon, Sardar Raja Singh, Trilok Singh Nishad and many others also expressed grief and said that there should be a high level inquiry into the attack on the main granthi so that it can be found how he was found lying in a suspicious condition covered in blood on the bed of his room.
