Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said on Friday (May 13) that an investigation by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed that the deaths of Taos County employees Anthony Martinez and Laurie Weathers on May 1 were what he had suspected: a murder-suicide.
The investigation found that Martinez appeared to have killed Weathers before killing himself. The pair were found dead in an SUV parked on Fresquez Road earlier this month.
Hogrefe said the investigation into the incident “determined a homicide and suicide with utmost certainty.”
“What lead Mr. Martinez to kill Ms. Weathers and then take his own life may never be completely clear or understood, but the facts of the case determining that is what happened are,” said Hogrefe is a press release.
Martinez was a sergeant at the Taos County Adult Detention Center and Weathers worked as a dispatcher with Taos Central Dispatch.
Martinez and Weathers had been in a relationship, according to family members.
