The Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm in Shepherds Flat, 122 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, is home to colourful gardens that look like they were plucked straight from a painter’s canvas.

Inspired by the grounds of European villas, the 40-hectare farm is perfect for holiday-starved travellers in search of overseas escape while Australia’s international border remains shut.

The farmhouse’s mottled brickwork is the same as it was when it was built over 150 years ago by the Swiss-Italian family who founded it.

There’s also a herb and vegetable garden and a restaurant serving up traditional Italian cuisine and classic country fare such as scones with cream and jam.

The farm is open from 10.30am to 5:30pm Friday through Tuesday until June 1, when it will close for the winter before reopening in September.

Recent photos of the vibrant purple field have drawn delighted responses on social media.

‘Had the most beautiful weekend here, it’s so peaceful to be in nature,’ one woman wrote.

A comment under an Instagram photo of the farm revealed a ‘small’ amount of this year’s lavender crop has already been harvested, but there’s still plenty of spectacular autumnal colours to enjoy.
