Furious NRL fans get locked out of Suncorp Stadium

Chaos at Suncorp Stadium as thousands of NRL fans are locked out thanks to a ticketing technical glitch – before being let in anyway leading to a social distancing ‘shambles’

  • Ticketek fail led to thousands being locked out of Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane
  • Fans were also locked out of the Adelaide Oval for the AFL’s preliminary final
  • Anxious staff at Suncorp Stadium eventually let crowds in without tickets
  • It led to crowds of people being pushed together in social distancing fail

Thousands of NRL and AFL fans were left furious on Friday night after a problem with their tickets saw them locked out of stadiums.

A nationwide glitch in Ticketek’s system caused machines to fail, leaving crowds waiting outside Suncorp Stadium and the Adelaide Oval.

In Brisbane, fans were getting anxious when they were still locked out four minutes before Melbourne Storm were due to take on the Canberra Raiders.

Eventually staff allowed fans without seeing tickets leading to hundreds of people trying to enter the venue, with many ignoring social distancing measures.

Chris Neal said it was unacceptable that state governments are willing to allow up to 40,000 sporting fans to pack into stadiums, but not allow music events to go ahead with the same amount of patrons

'If sport can continue under these supposed restrictions and controls then so should entertainment,' he said

People were seen charging into the stadium in a situation that was later described as a ‘complete shambles’.

Ticketek said it would send all patrons their tickets again on email which could be downloaded and presented at the gates.

Many took to Twitter to share their frustration after being forced to wait outside.

‘Trying to get into Suncorp. Game starts in 4 minutes and we’re hardly moving. Disaster,’ one woman wrote.

Mr Neal said the photo he uploaded 'clearly shows social distancing was not in place at [Friday night's] game'

‘When Ticketek crashed but then is fixed, social distancing doesn’t matter,’ one man wrote after posting a picture of the crowds

‘Wish we could access our tickets to get into the NRL final right now!!!!! Stuck outside the stadium with 100’s of others not able to get our mobile tickets. Now going to miss kick off ,’ one wrote.

After employees allowed fans to enter unchecked, social media users uploaded pictures of people squashed together.

Problems were also encountered at the AFL’s preliminary final between Port Adelaide and Richmond at the Adelaide Oval.

One woman said her friend and husband were stuck outside the gates.

‘Ticketek’s mobile website has crashed and there are hundreds of stranded footy goers who can’t get into Adelaide Oval as they can’t load their tickets,’ she said.
