Lady Louise Windsor, 16, joins her father Prince Edward on a horse riding hack in sunny Windsor

Lady Louise Windsor and Prince Edward made the most of the sunshine this morning with a horse riding hack around the stunning Windsor estate.

The 16-year-old royal showed off her impressive equestrian skills as she trotted behind her father, 56, atop an impressive brown steed.

The pair looked to be enjoying the fine weather as they rode through the countryside close to Windsor Castle – where Edward’s mother the Queen, 94, has been isolating with Prince Philip, 99, during lockdown.

Her Majesty is expected to travel to the Balmoral estate in Scotland within days for their annual summer holiday.

Sophie Wessex and Lady Louise’s younger brother, James, Viscount Severn, 12, were absent from the horse-riding trip.

It’s the second time the teenager and her father have been spotted on a horse ride since the easing of lockdown. The family has spent the period holed up at their Bagshot Park residence in Surrey.

Lady Louise looked every inch the keen rider in a bright pink polo shirt and beige jodhpurs.

Erring on the side of caution, the young royal also wore a protective back brace and riding helmet.

Protective Edward, dressed in a lilac polo shirt with a black gilet and brown jodhpurs, looked to be keeping a close eye on his daughter during the outing.

Confident Lady Louise looked at ease riding, despite having had a traumatic fall from her pony on the Queen’s estate at the age of eight which left her with a broken arm.

In February 2018, Lady Louise was reported to have fractured a leg during a family break in the upmarket ski resort of St Moritz in Switzerland.

The royal, who was 14 years old at the time, fell and injured herself and ended up on crutches.

Lady Louise is Edward and Sophie’s eldest child and only daughter – she is twelfth in line to the throne and is the Queen’s youngest granddaughter.

Her father, the Earl of Wessex, is tenth in line to the throne, which will be succeeded by his elder brother, Charles.

Lady Louise and her brother James join the royal family for major events, such as Trooping the Colour, but have largely grown up away from the limelight.

An avid horse rider, she often competes in the British Driving Society Championship for Young Drivers.

Last month Sophie Wessex, 55, Patron of IAPB, launched the 2020 Eye Health Heroes award programme. The Countess has previously told how she was moved by her daughter’s vision problems to campaign on behalf of blind and visually impaired people around the world.

Sophie’s daughter Louise was born prematurely in 2003, causing a condition called strabismus, which left her with what the countess described as a ‘profound’ squint.

She has since had the problem corrected because cosmetically it was awkward for her, Sophie said, and she can now see properly.

Yesterday it was reported royal aides who have travelled to Balmoral ahead of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s arrival are despairing that their Covid-secure sleeping quarters on the Scottish estate are like a ‘Colditz prison camp’.

The hand-picked team of servants are in a two-week quarantine as they prepare the castle and some have found conditions wanting.

Staff have been banned from social activity and the annual Ghillies Ball has also been cancelled due to coronavirus.
