Yulong picks up southern raider Tofane for The Everest

Yulong will look to become the first slot-holder to win The Everest twice after Redzel ran in its slot when he won The Everest for a second time in 2018.

Tofane becomes the fifth horse to be selected for a slot this year after Nature Strip, Classique Legend, Gytrash and Rothfire and will continue her preparation in Melbourne, where the Gilgai Stakes will be her final lead-up at Flemington on October 3, mainly because of COVID restrictions.

“We are very happy to have her locked in and it makes it easier to get her ready knowing we have a slot,” trainer Michael Moroney said. “We are organising to get staff up to Sydney for the final preparation. Because of the two-week quarantine, we have to get that done fast.

“She’ll probably stay down here for the Gilgai now she has a slot.

“The idea has been to go into The Everest third-up, which is generally her best run. She will handle any sort of ground and she will love the pressure that will be in The Everest this year.

“She is not the type of horse that likes to sit and sprint, and we saw that on Saturday [when she ran third to Zoutori in the Bobby Lewis Quality], which I thought was a great effort.

“I’m really pleased to continue my association with Yulong and hopefully we can win for them again.”

Tofane was a $34 chance in betting for The Everest on Wednesday, which still has Nature Strip as a $3.50 favourite. Moroney said a Sydney jockey would be booked to ride the mare in The Everest by the end of the week.
